Tonight the Patriots head to Florida for a Thursday night matchup vs the Bucs. As we all know the Patriots have had more than their share of problems on defense but in my opinion they’re correctable problems. Getting beat because the men across from you are better, faster and stronger is out of your control and can’t be fixed in a few weeks but covering underneath when you supposed to have the deep half simply because you got confused with the play call or formation is a brain fart that can be fixed rather quickly.
In my opinion the thing giving them the most problems and causing confusion is the style of QB’s they have faced in 3 of their 4 games. Alex Smith, Watson and Cam all did what they wanted and kept the Pats on their heels all night with their unorthodox read option style of play. It caused confusion in the front 7, the secondary and at times made them look like a D-2 school playing Alabama. But when they faced Brees who is by far the best QB they have seen all year in his own building, they shut New Orleans down. Why? Glad you asked! Brees isn’t a threat to do a thing with his feet and is a basic old school drop back passer. Wasn’t any blown coverage or gaping holes for the backs to run through and they even stopped them on 4th down a few times. The defenses looked as good as we thought they would be in August.
Tampa is closer to New Orleans in that Winston is a drop back passer and wants to throw it down field almost to a fault. I expect the Patriots to look a lot better even on a short week vs this offense and Brady and company to have a field day vs the Bucs D who will be without Kwon Alexander, T.J. Ward, Keith Tandy and Lavonte David. Bucs only have 1 sack all season, allowed backup QB Case Keenum to drop 369 yards and 34 points on them and allowed the Giants to score more than 20. Something they couldn’t do in 9 straight games going back to last season.
If the offense doesn’t put the ball on the carpet and Brady doesn’t get color blind with the funky all white color rush uniforms flying around I expect a much needed Patriots win in Tampa over the short handed Buccaneers.
